![]() ![]() They look nice enough, but a game like this has the opportunity to race through some of the most stunning environments from the Final Fantasy series. After being spoiled with the kind of tracks you can speed through in Mario Kart, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the courses in Chocobo GP are just… bland. A nice feature, and a rare something Mario Kart could really do with adding.īut now that we’re through with what makes Chocobo GP stand out, it’s time to discuss what makes it entirely forgettable. Chocobo GP includes local and online multiplayer modes, in addition to an online tournament mode for the players who want to prove they’re the best. Of course a game like this truly shines when it’s time for multiplayer mayhem. It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s a nice distraction. Winning without taking damage will result in a Perfect Race, which is an accolade you must achieve on every course if you plan on 100% mastering the story campaign. Instead of just tasking you with coming in first place, you must finish ahead of certain characters or complete courses within a specified timeframe. The win conditions of those story races are much better. You’ll find yourself reaching for the skip button after several minutes of inane chatter between the cast - it’s clearly aimed at a younger audience. It’s a premise, I’ll give it that, but not a particularly engaging one. The story is told in very simple cinematic cutscenes, with 3D characters standing on 2D backgrounds as they discuss their reasons for racing. One is an actual story mode that follows your main Chocobo and his friends taking on the world in a racing tournament. There are a few things that make it stand out other than the Final Fantasy branding, though. Unfortunately, Chocobo GP just doesn’t hold up to its contemporaries. Even the base mechanics of drifting around corners to charge up a quick boost are intact. They’re both cute, family-friendly kart racers with a colorful variety of characters, courses, and items to experiment with. No matter how you slice it, comparisons between Chocobo GP and Mario Kart are impossible to avoid, especially considering that the Final Fantasy racer is launching alongside a new season of DLC for everyone’s favorite plumber: Waluigi. All in all, March is already proving to be an incredibly busy month for games, so it just might be the worst possible time for Chocobo GP to come out. But even the hardcore racing crowd is catered to this month thanks to Gran Turismo 7, which has received widespread critical acclaim. It’s a time for the resilient Mario Kart community to celebrate. This month sees the release of brand new DLC for the beloved Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch and one of the greatest kart racers ever made. ![]()
